Intervention Doomed by Human Rights

by Simon 25. May 2009 05:16

Tony Abbott can see the writing on the wall, and it spells disaster for the safety and development of Aboriginal communities of the NT;

BARRIE CASSIDY: The Government wants to reinstate the Racial Discrimination Act clearly. Now once they do that, it's true isn't it that they will have to allow people to opt out of the compulsory income management scheme, otherwise it would contravene the act? That's the scheme that quarantines part of their welfare for essentials.

TONY ABBOTT: Well certainly they'll have human rights lawyers crawling all over the intervention and I don't think that's going to be very productive for anyone except the human rights lawyers.

I fear Barrie that having seen the introduction of Whitlamism in economic policy, we're now going to see the introduction of Whitlamism in Indigenous policy and that's the last thing that we need.

I fear that the left of the Labor Party has always hated the intervention, only ever supported it through gritted teeth and now we're going to see a concerted attempt to roll it back.

Of course the introduction of "Human Rights" will mean the reestablishment of those factors that have led to the denigration of Aboriginal society over the years, Alcohol and Porn.

Rudds Shameful Actionless Spin Hurts the Children

by Simon 11. May 2009 17:05

Closing the Gap report speech to Parliament, February 2009:

Mr Speaker, that brings me to the third pillar of our national strategy for closing the gap, which is re-building the everyday social norms that underpin strong families and healthy communities.

We must address the dysfunctional culture of violence and neglect that blights some communities.

We must all work toward shared values.

Indigenous women and
children must know they will be safe from violence and abuse.

Our investments to rebuild communities will help people increase their personal responsibility.

We will support people to be responsible parents, tenants, students and employees.

What do we get, ATSIC and this;

New figures from the Northern Territory Government show an increase in children diagnosed with sexually transmitted infections.

The statistics for 2008 show 22 STI cases reported in children under 10 years of age - double the number reported the previous year.

Twenty-one of those infections involved chlamydia, with one child diagnosed with gonorrhoea.

A further 169 STI cases were reported in children between 10 and 14-years-old.

There were 68 cases of gonorrhoea, 62 of chlamydia, two syphilis infections and 37 notifications of trichomoniasis.

Part Breed, all power

by Simon 15. April 2009 08:50

From Wikipedia;

The Australian Bureau of Statistics 2005 snapshot of Australia showed that the Indigenous population had grown at twice the rate of the overall population since 1996 when the Indigenous population stood at 283,000. As of June 2001, the Australian Bureau of Statistics estimated the total resident Indigenous population to be 458,520 (2.4% of Australia's total), 90% of whom identified as Aboriginal, 6% Torres Strait Islander and the remaining 4% being of dual Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parentage.

Much of the increase since 1996 can be attributed to greater numbers of people identifying themselves as Aborigines and to changed definitions of aboriginality.

I would also suggest the additional welfare benefits available to Aboriginal people.

Andrew Bolt suggests that its not just welfare that attracts the newly converted, its more of a politically advantage sought;

MEET the white face of a new black race - the political Aborigine.
Sadly he names the growing litany of those living privileged lives, thanks in the most part to the White part of their lives, claiming the political power and emphasis from those in the most need.

Unintended Racist Consequences.

by Simon 13. April 2009 12:04

Its the ongoing problem with treating a type of people as different, having different needs, or treating them differently;

An academic who has just completed a review of education in the Northern Territory says the Territory's Education Department has inadvertently created an underclass.

Last year national testing showed Indigenous students in the Northern Territory had some of the highest illiteracy rates in the country.

"For too long too many of us had thought we'd been culturally sensitive by having watered-down or second-rate outcomes for Aboriginal children," he (Dr Chris Sarra, director of the Indigenous Education Leadership Institute in Queensland)  said.

"Clearly that's not useful to us and is not very much in line with what Aboriginal people expect from education and what we should expect from education."

Dr Sarra is Indigenous, and says when he was at school, it was accepted that he could cruise academically with virtually no-one asking him to push himself.

"That's clearly been my experience," he said.

"We can't get to a point where we just cannot see the kids for the black faces. We've got to take Aboriginal children as high potential learners, high calibre learners with tremendous potential."

Bravo Chris.

Want the Land? Just Ask Kevin Rudd for it.

by Simon 10. April 2009 06:29

Aborigines may no longer have to prove their connection to land under a radical change to the native title claim system being considered by the federal government.

Under the proposal, the government has committed to exploring the idea of shifting the burden of proof of connection to land from Aboriginal claimants to states, territories and others, reports say.

So we make spurious claims both easier to make and burden the governments (Tax-Payers), or "Others" with the cost of proving or disproving the validity of the claim.

I assume the "Others" mentioned would be those poor saps with property or investments in the area claimed.

Obviously we should see a greater uptake of native claims under this new system. This ALP government certainly loves opening floodgates.

Government wants to take my nulla nulla.

by Simon 24. February 2009 15:28

Concerned Aboriginal activists are about to head to the UN to get those personal rights back,

Aboriginal people from central Australia are set to complain to the United Nations about the Federal intervention into Indigenous communities.

Mr (human rights lawyer George) Newhouse will address a public forum in Canberra tonight about how the Emergency Response has affected the rights of Aboriginal people.

"They are very concerned about the way the Intervention has been rolled out and the negative impact on their lives," he said.

Meanwhile their Kinfolk are proving the need to establish Law and Order over personal rights;

More than a hundred people have rioted in the outback town of Tennant Creek, with members of warring clans clashing with boomerangs, axes, hammers and nulla nullas.

It should be this simple, when society goes wrong the authorities need to intervene. Without fear or favor.
